A reliable city ride begins before you leave. A quick inspection helps prevent avoidable stops and makes the bicycle easier and safer to control.
Set the correct tire pressure
Use the pressure range printed on the tire sidewall and adjust it for rider weight and road conditions. Tires that are too soft roll slowly and puncture more easily; excessive pressure reduces grip and comfort.
Check brakes and controls
Test both brake levers, confirm that the wheels rotate freely, and make sure the handlebar and saddle cannot move unexpectedly. Shift through the gears before entering traffic.
Carry the essentials
Take a lock, lights, a compact pump, tire levers, and a spare tube. Water and weather-appropriate clothing matter even on a short route.
Plan a calm first section
Choose a familiar street or cycle path for the beginning of the ride. It gives you time to notice unusual sounds or handling before moving farther from home.
